Your teeth are incredibly strong and put up with much daily use. While strong, however, they can still be faced with damage. Cracks, chips, and even decay can compromise the structure of your teeth and can allow bacteria inside. Without treatment, damage can become worse, and the teeth can be faced with serious infections. Crowns are a common treatment for restoring damaged teeth. At Florida Prosthodontics, we offer metal-free crowns.

What Is a Crown?
When your teeth are damaged, treatment is needed right away. Damage that affects more than just the outermost layer of your teeth can compromise the integrity of the teeth and can put the teeth at risk for infection. A crown is a dental restoration that is designed to protect damaged teeth while restoring their strength. They are essentially like caps for your damaged teeth, made to cover the entire visible surface.

The Issue With Metal Crowns
There are a few different types of crowns that contain metals, including all metal crowns and porcelain fused to metal crowns. These crowns have a few major disadvantages. One of the biggest disadvantages of an all-metal crown is that it is silver or gold in color. No matter where the crown is placed in your mouth, it can be seen. PFM crowns have a layer of porcelain on the exterior, which provides a more aesthetic restoration. However, there is often a thin metal line that shows through along the gumline. The other major disadvantage of metal crowns is that they can pose issues for those who are allergic or sensitive to the material.

Restoring Damaged Teeth With Metal-Free Crowns
At Florida Prosthodontics, we restore damaged teeth with a metal-free option, ceramic crowns. Ceramic crowns are made completely from ceramic and contain no metals at all. The material perfectly matches the rest of your natural teeth, providing a seamless restoration.

Typically, the process of getting a ceramic crown requires two separate appointments with an approximately two week waiting period. We can provide you with ceramic crowns in a single appointment with CAD/CAM technology. After we prepare your tooth, a process that involves removing a portion of the enamel from the affected tooth to create sufficient space for the crown to fit comfortably and naturally. Next, a digital impression is taken, which displays on the computer as a 3-D image. With this image, we can design a crown specific to you.

Once the crown is designed, the information is sent to our in-house milling machine. A block of ceramic is placed inside and the machine mills, or cuts out your crown. We are then able to stain and glaze it before firing it in an oven and polishing it. Once it is finished, we make sure that it fits perfectly. If no adjustments are needed, we bond the crown in place.
