Types of Procedures

Assistant in Merritt Island, FL explaining types of procedures to patient at Florida Prosthodontics
As prosthodontists, Florida Prosthodontics specializes in the repair of damaged teeth as well as the replacement of missing teeth. The goal of prosthodontic treatment is to restore the health of your mouth while also providing you with the best aesthetic results possible. To achieve these goals, we perform some different procedures.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure performed to treat minor imperfections in your teeth, including small chips and cracks, small spacing issues, and small or misshapen teeth. Boning uses a composite resin material, a material that blends in with the color of your natural tooth enamel, to achieve the desired results. The procedure is quick, non-invasive, and completely painless.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are types of fillings, used to treat cavities in your teeth. Often made from porcelain or ceramic, these types of fillings are known as indirect fillings. Instead of being cured inside the cavity, the filling is made outside of the tooth from an impression. Inlays are onlays used in situations where traditional fillings might otherwise compromise the affected tooth, such as cavities on the chewing surfaces of your molars.

Veneers are a restoration used to correct minor cosmetic flaws in your teeth, including small chips and cracks, minor spacing or overlapping issues, teeth that are small or misshapen, or discoloration. Typically made from porcelain, veneers are thin shell-like structures that are made to be bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth, effectively restoring, or enhancing, the appearance of your smile.

Crowns are a treatment often used to treat teeth with more significant damage. They are designed to protect the tooth from further damage, prevent infection, and help you to avoid the need for a tooth extraction. A crown is a cap-like restoration that covers over the entire visible surface of a damaged tooth. They can be made from several different materials, although ceramic crowns are the most aesthetically appealing option. To be placed, a portion of the tooth enamel needs to be removed. The crown is then created from an impression of your mouth and bonded into place over the tooth.

Tooth Removal

While repairing damaged teeth, keeping them in their sockets is always the preferred treatment, this solution is not always possible. Severely damaged or decayed teeth may be too weak to support a crown, leaving the affected tooth susceptible to infections and other complications. In cases such as these, the best solution is to remove, or extract, the tooth and provide you with a replacement. A bridge is a traditional solution for replacing a single missing tooth. Typically made from ceramic, a bridge consists of a pontic tooth and two dental crowns. The pontic, or replacement, tooth fills in the empty space left behind by your missing tooth. The crowns function as anchors, holding your replacement tooth in place on your adjacent teeth.

Dentures are the traditional treatment for replacing an entire arch of missing teeth, or sections of missing teeth. These restorations are removable, consisting of an acrylic base and acrylic resin teeth. The base rests directly on your gums, using them for support.

Implants are a modern treatment for tooth replacement, providing an alternative to bridges and dentures. Implants use small titanium posts, which are surgically placed in your jawbone. The bone fuses to the posts as you heal, integrating them into your jaw. Once you have fully healed, the posts are then able to provide secure support for your replacement teeth.

TMJ and Bruxism Treatment

We can also provide treatment for TMJ disorder and bruxism. These issues can cause excessive tooth wear, tooth damage, and even tooth loss in addition to severe pain in the jaw and temporomandibular joints. We can provide you with the treatment you need to prevent the effects of grinding and clenching, protecting your teeth and alleviating your pain.

Damaged and missing teeth require the special attention of a dentist highly trained in providing treatment for these issues. Call Florida Prosthodontics today at (321) 252-9950 to schedule your appointment.
