Single Missing Tooth Replacement
For many people, losing a single adult tooth may not seem like that big of a deal, especially if the tooth is toward the back of the mouth out of sight from their smile. However, even if the gap cannot be seen, replacing a single missing tooth is critical. Florida Prosthodontics can help with single missing tooth replacement options.
Effects of Losing a Single Tooth
Losing just one tooth might not seem like a big deal, but it can have a significant impact on the quality of your life, even if the empty space left behind cannot be seen when you smile. Effects of tooth loss include:
The traditional treatment for replacing a single missing tooth is a bridge. There are a few different types of bridges. The bridge most commonly used is a fixed bridge. Typically made from ceramic, it is milled out of a solid block. A replacement tooth, called a pontic tooth, sits between two dental crowns. The crowns anchor the bridge into place on your adjacent teeth referred to as abutment teeth.
Placing a bridge typically takes two separate visits. During your first appointment, the abutment teeth are prepared. This involves removing a small portion of the enamel from each tooth. This is done to reduce the teeth in size so that the bridge can fit naturally in with the rest of your teeth. Next, an impression of your mouth is taken, which is sent to a dental lab where the bridge is designed and created. Once it is ready, It is bonded into place.
