Tooth loss has a significant impact on your whole life. Moreover, the more teeth that you lose, the worse these effects become. It becomes more and more difficult to eat your favorite foods. Your speech becomes more difficult to understand. Your smile suffers. With significant tooth loss, your facial appearance is also affected. Your lips and cheeks sink in, your skin sags and forms jowls, and wrinkles start to appear. If you are missing an entire arch of teeth, Florida Prosthodontics can replace them with complete dentures.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures, also called full dentures, are a treatment for replacing an entire arch of missing teeth. Dentures have been in use for a few hundred years. While they have undergone many developments and improvements, making them more natural in appearance and feel, the premise behind them is still the same. Complete dentures consist of an acrylic base that holds acrylic resin teeth. They are made from impressions of your mouth, which enables the base to fit over your gums. The gum tissue provides support for your complete denture, and suction holds it in place.

Complete Denture Process

Complete dentures often take two appointments to create. During your first appointment, we first remove any unhealthy teeth that may still be sitting in your jaw. Removing these unhealthy teeth is key to maintaining your health. Leaving unhealthy teeth in place can increase your risk of infections and other serious complications. Next, impressions of your mouth are taken. These impressions are sent to our dental lab, where the denture is designed and fabricated. Once it is ready, you return for your second appointment. We check the denture to make sure that it fits and is comfortable.

Denture Care

Your complete denture does require additional daily care. Every night, it needs to be removed and cleaned and then left to soak while you sleep. Before removing your denture, lay a towel on the counter or fill the sink with water. After you remove your denture, brush it with a soft bristled brush and denture paste. Do not use toothpaste, which can cause micro-scratches that can harbor bacteria. After you brush your denture, place it in a glass of denture cleaning solution and let it soak overnight. Next, brush your arch of healthy teeth and your gums. In the morning, brush your teeth and gums again. Rinse your dentures off and place them back in your mouth.
